Downtown's First Friday art tour gets another stop this weekend, which showcases the work of local photographer Marilyn Szabo. Sponsored by Szabo's regular gallery, Victoria Boyce Gallery of Scottsdale's Main Street, Szabo's latest will be shown in her personal studio space. Szabo, known for her stunning work in black-and-white photography, will be showcasing several pieces, including her character studies of Italian opera diva Maria Callas. Victoria Boyce is hopeful that the new space will be a regular addition to First Fridays. "I've been watching what's happening downtown with great hopes," she says. "We're going to test the waters." New exhibit takes a look back

Ever wish you could watch your career in rewind? That is what local "video savant" Steve Gompf has done for his latest show, which includes examples of every medium he has dabbled in as well as Gompf himself speaking on life as an artist. "This show is giving me a chance to reevaluate the art I've made over the past 15 years and the spectrum it runs through -- from the sacred to the profane," says Gompf. Steve Gompf: Rewind will be shown Saturday, October 4, at 7 and 9 p.m. at the Paper Heart Gallery, 222 North Fifth Avenue. - Quetta Carpenter

Alice Cooper hosts First Friday fiesta

Once the standard-bearer for all things shocking, Alice Cooper has made quite the graceful transition to middle age. More likely to tee off with parents these days than piss them off, Cooper has nevertheless remained a steadfast supporter of the arts by hosting The Pulse, a monthly art and music event, at his popular downtown restaurant. A slew of talented locals takes center stage for a special edition of The Pulse, dubbed Night of Renaissance, Friday, October 3, at Alice Cooper'stown. Showtime is 8 p.m. The eclectic night of art and music includes a CD release party for local rockers Euriska, the work of tattoo artist Jon Garber, and pieces by graffiti artist Casey Wallin.
