Mike Fitzgerald announced Wednesday that he was closing the doors of Climbmax, effective immediately.

Word spread quickly through the climbing community, and an open letter was posted by Fitzgerald on the Climbmax website:

"Due to reasons beyond our control, we have been forced to immediately close this facility," Fitzgerald writes. "Closing the gym was not taken lightly and we did all within our power to keep our gym open. As a family run business, we took great pride and pleasure in your satisfaction. We were proud and honored to extend our love of climbing to such a warm and friendly community."

Dear Members, Friends and Associates,

Climbmax Climbing Gym regrets to inform you that we have closed our doors as of 9/14/11. Due to reasons beyond our control, we have been forced to immediately close this facility. Closing the gym was not taken lightly and we did all within our power to keep our gym open. As a family run business, we took great pride and pleasure in your satisfaction. We were proud and honored to extend our love of climbing to such a warm and friendly community.

To many, Climbmax Climbing Gym was a home, a social gathering point to which we all held a strong bond. Many friends were made, many good times were had, and for some a new way of life was found. Whatever the case may be, we will all miss the gym. In the least, we hope that you keep these bonds going and sustain your passion for climbing. We would like to thank all those who called the gym their home. You made the gym what it was and we thank you for everything you brought to our scene. We appreciate your patronage and support.

As to the many who hold memberships, we are trying to make amends. There are three other gyms in the valley that we will be working with in an effort to accommodate your loss. Our goal is to offer a continuation of your remaining membership time at another gym. Below, is the list of gyms that may work for you. For the time being, we will continue to send emails with any updates and information in this regard. Additionally, we will be posting information on our website. If you care to email, we will keep communications open at: [email protected].
