If you've ever seen JJCnV play, you may have observed that the two killer dude musicians in the trio -- Pete Hinz and Jeff Barthold -- aren't exactly tearing it up in the clothing department. (No offense, fellas.)
On the other hand, Dana Stern, the group's co-singer and guitarist (and wife of Hinz), not only sounds good on the mic/on her ax, but her style is unbeatable.
Seriously. It's so cool that we bet she's broken countless hearts when concertgoers find out that she's taken.
What are you wearing right now?
Homemade Ultramaroon t-shirt, pencil skirt, glasses, my octopus bracelet (Horatio), and shoes with stars on 'em.
What is the last item of clothing you bought?
It was a trifecta: vintage bathing suit, bathing cap-esque hat from Sweets & Beats (thanks, Emily!), and vintage green turtleneck.
What is the item of clothing you most covet at the moment?
Kat Bjelland's Fontanelle-era red dress.
Give us a childhood memory of you and clothes.
(the interview continues after the jump)
A family friend was a seamstress and she had made me a little lavender gown/dress. Apparently, I insisted on wearing it for the Academy Awards. (Which was on television. Why I wanted to wear it? Who knows.) I was about four and passed out before the opening red carpet business was over. I would also throw a massive fit if anyone tried to get me to wear pants. Even then, I was a dresses and skirts kind of girl.
Name five items every woman should have in her closet.
*A pencil skirt.
*Mary Jane's and/or go-go boots.
*A t-shirt with a racy double entendre emblazoned upon it.
*Fantastically unique accessories (I recommend anything by Miss Hotcakes and even at Sweets & Beats).
*At least one vintage item that makes you feel like a million bucks (but probably only costs ten).
Name an item of clothing that's best when it's vintage.
Just one!? I can't possibly answer this with that kind of restriction.
Name an item of clothing you should NEVER buy used.
Um . . . undies. Seriously. Why would you!? Oh, and I would guess wigs might fall into this category as well.
What is your one piece of fashion advice for Phoenix?
Quit schlubbin' around! Stand up straight, no pajamas/scrubs outside of the house/hospital. And really, what's with the Crocs? One last note: general smarts, a quick wit, and a good book are three vastly underrated accessories.
