Rooms filled with art depicting dancers always pack a punch, especially when the bodies are at different scales, range from still to slow to frenetic, and include entertainer and recent guest judge on So You Think You Can Dance, Toni Basil.
In Dance with Camera, the exhibition at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art running through May 1, the operative word is with as the camera acts as stage, audience, and the dancer we never see. The work transforms movement and explores the visual and conceptual connections among Hollywood musicals, avant-garde cinema, postmodern dance, and even MTV. Spanning films from the 1960s to today, the show includes internationally renowned artists Bruce Conner, Tacita Dean, Maya Deren, Bruce Nauman, and Yvonne Rainer.
Wednesdays-Sundays. Starts: Jan. 15. Continues through May 1, 2011
