Some places just look better at night. Vegas, for instance -- the flashing bulbs and neon, gaudy and impotent during the day, turn the city into a luminous playground once the sun sets. The Scottsdale Civic Center Plaza, too, is more lovely at night, and has the added benefit of being -- unlike Sin City -- the perfect place for a run.

The Night Run, one of Arizona’s oldest organized races, takes advantage of this picturesque backdrop with 5K and 10K runs, a race for kids 5 and under, a post-race vendor expo and a live animal exhibit featuring some real night owls.

The night run is held Saturday, May 10 on the northeast lawn of Scottsdale City Hall, near the intersection of 75th Street and Main Street. The 5-K and 10-K races start at 7:30 p.m. -- just after sunset. Registration is $35 for fun-runners and $40 for those who want chip timers. Visit www.thenightrun.com for more.
