In an early nod to Black History Month, Black Theatre Troupe is presenting Jeff Stetson’s riveting Fathers and Other Strangers this week and next. Stetson’s story, about a Black everyman who struggles to stand as a worthwhile example for his son, details the legacy of a faceless victim of America’s oppressive system of racism and civil injustice. This man’s son (played by Kwane Vedrene) grows up to become an esteemed psychiatrist whose patients are the sort of people who kept men like his father “in their place.” Stetson, whose previous work includes the film adaptation of his novel Blood on the Leaves (which starred Jamie Foxx), manages to make something new of an oft-told tale of oppression and inequity.
