Patricia Sannit
Phoenix artist Patricia Sannit says her most important tools are her hands. It makes sense, because that’s what she uses to shape and mark ceramic forms, before layering them into sculptures that channel the intersection of cultures throughout human history.
She’ll talk about her work at Phoenix Art Museum, 1625 North Central Avenue, at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 7. It’s part of a free evening with a museum support organization called Contemporary Forum, which recognizes mid-career artists in Arizona who exhibit sustained excellence in their work. Sannit received the top honor, the Arlene and Morton Scult Contemporary Forum Artist Award, in 2016.

Host of Changing Hands’ First Draft book club and reporter for the Arizona Republic, Barbara VanDenburgh leads a discussion of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale. The dystopian novel was published in 1985 and finds the former United States overrun by a theocracy that destroys human rights, particularly women’s. In that society, women couldn’t read this book or any others. And recent political events have Atwood’s book seeming less like fiction and more like a frightening possibility. “Exposures”
Phoenix artist Ann Morton has created some powerful works in recent years, including a post-presidential election piece. It’s a dainty white hankie with red and blue embroidery that basically says the county is fucked. But now she’s turned her eye to textile arts by other artists, serving as juror for an exhibition of textile arts titled “Exposures.”
It’s happening at two Chandler locations: Vision Gallery, 10 East Chicago Street, and Chandler Center for the Arts, 250 North Arizona Avenue. You can see the free exhibitions, featuring works by dozens of Arizona fiber artists, on Friday, June 9, when both gallery locations are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visit Vision Gallery website. “All Art Arizona”
Ever wonder about the state of the arts in Arizona? See for yourself, when Gilbert gallery Art Intersection, 207 North Gilbert Road, #201, presents works by 100 or so Arizona artists. You can see the free “All Art Arizona” exhibition through Saturday, July 15. It includes paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, ceramics, and works in several additional media created by emerging and established artists.
Participating artists include Brian Boner, Daniel Friedman, Rembrandt Quiballo, Ann Tracy, and Brianna Voron, to name a few.
