It's not difficult to see the "hipster" in hipstamatic -- but we love it nonetheless.
Hipstamatic's a new iPhone application that can turn any old iphone into a hipstamat-style camera. This may all sound Greek, so we brought in Jason Hill, who set up an Etsy store a few days ago to showcase his own prints, to explain.
Hill originally wanted to put together a Polaroid show after buying a ton of Polaroid film (RIP). But then he found Hipstamatic and is starting to get different art show ideas...
"Basically, the application allows you take vintage-looking photos with different lenses, flashes and film," says Hill. "It's a new kind of instant photography and a bit of a phenomenon."
(A bit of history and a few directions after the jump...)
Hipstamatic photography was introduced with the creation of the Hipstamatic 100 in 1982. Bruce and Winston Dorbowski wanted to create a plastic camera that cost less than the film, and because they liked their Kodak Instamatic so much, they decided on "Hipstamatic."
The camera and style remained dormant until the iPhone application was created, hence Jason Hill's discovery and current side passion. Hill explains:
1. Buy the Hipstamatic application from iTunes (an iPhone is essential here).
2. Tap on the small, lens-looking icon.
3. Slide your finger across different parts of the camera to choose a lens (John. S, Jimmy or Kaimal), flash (standard or dreampop), and film (blank, Ina's 69 or Kodot).
4. Find something pictureworthy and press the round orange button. Note: Vintagey/rundown things work well here.
5. View. Print. Sell. Or keep.
