When it comes to Phoenix’s relatively short history, the saying “there’s nothing new under the sun” comes to mind. Mystery Castle? Been there. Fiesta Bowl? Done that. Winnie Ruth Judd? Seen the movie.

Fortunately, there’s more to discover about our mega metropolis at The Trunk Space’s annual Grid Show, kicking off with an opening reception at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 15, at 1506 Grand Avenue. Past displays have included memorabilia from Phoenix’s last hourly-rate motel and a piece detailing the Security Building’s days as a brothel.

So what’s on tap for The Grid 2012? “Even the artists don’t talk about the show until it’s up,” says participant Marshall Shore. “It’s amazing when you walk in and learn about a piece of Arizona history you never knew.” While their contributions remain more mysterious than the Phoenix Lights, Shore confirms that in honor of the Arizona Centennial each artist is responsible for one particular decade in a painted timeline project.
