To explain her current project documenting Native American culture in the Southwest, photographer Elite Henenson starts with a little bit of history about herself. She was born in Israel and traveled to South America after completing her compulsory military service. It was there that she discovered her passion for photography. She studied photography in Santa Barbara, where her interest in native culture was piqued. Now she presents "Native Americans in the 21st Century," a show capping her fine arts studies at Arizona State University. Works in the exhibition include imagery of powwows, people in traditional native garb, and dancers presented in media including traditional photography, photogravures, digital composites, and video. They explore how native culture is both preserved and alive.

The show is on view through Friday, September 13, at Gallery 100, 951 South Mill Avenue, Suite 199, in Tempe. Hours Thursday, September 12, are noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free. Visit www.art.asu.edu/gallery/gallery100 for more.

Sept. 9-12, 12-5 p.m.; Fri., Sept. 13, 12-3 p.m., 2013
