This summer vacation doesn't have to be synonymous with Playstation, Wii, DSi or any other energizing, brain-stimulating plastic box with a screen and buttons.

That's because Laboratory5, the art venture brainchild of Tempe-based Cyndi Coon and Jeremy Briddell, is hosting an art/writing workshop for local tweens called WIYS WAYD.

So what does WIYS WAYD stand for anyway? (More details after the jump.)

Answer: What is Your Story? What Are You Doing?

From Monday, June 28 through Thursday, July 1, kid participants are encouraged to brainstorm characters and story lines. Characters and stories are then written, drawn and shared in a bound book (that doesn't even resemble a video game controller!).

There will be two sessions offered daily. The morning session runs from 9 a.m. to noon and an afternoon workshop repeats from 1 to 4 p.m.

Classes will be held in the Fruit Packing Shed at Sahuaro Ranch, 9802 N. 59th Ave. and are sponsored by the Glendale Library and Arts Department

To register online, go to www.glendaleaz.com/ParksandRecreation under Classes and Programs. There's a $20 non-refundable application fee per workshop and student. For more information, call 623-930-3557.
