Renowned British scribe Henry Havelock Ellis penned some powerful prose in his day, including a rather potent notion about the nature of dance. Describing it as “loftiest, the most moving, the most beautiful of the arts,” the old-timey author wrote that dancing is “no mere translation or abstraction from life…it is life itself.”

Witness proof of this poetic passage writ large when Golden Lion holds its annual Celebration of Dance on Saturday, June 4. Performers from more than 25 burgeoning local troupes will fly across the stage of the Phoenix Theatre, 100 East McDowell Road, showing off their skills and demonstrating all manner of beautiful and graceful movements. Dance styles from ballet to Bollywood will be unleashed by companies ranging from the Mayuri Dance Group to the Rena Backer School. A half-dozen hip-hop and urban dance troupes are also scheduled to perform, including Neo Phon`Etix, Living Energy, and EPIK Dance Company.
