The Phoenix Art Museum will soon be showing more than just a few documentaries and classical films -- they're bringing in a live theater.
The museum recently joined up with National Theatre Live and the Arizona Theater Company to bring broadcast performances of Broadway musicals and powerful plays to museum regulars and newcomers alike.
Broadcasts will be hosted in the recently renovated 294 seat theater inside the building, complete with HD 5.1 surround sound to make each show feel as if it were in-person.
National Theatre Live broadcasts shows from the National Theatre in London to more than 150 theaters across the U.S. Previous shows include Phedre, Hamlet, and Much Ado About Nothing.
The run begins on February 13 with the Broadway musical FELA!. Produced in part by hip-hop star Jay-Z and actor Will Smith, FELA! is a show that combines dance, theater, and music to portray the life of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, a pioneer in Afrobeat.
The museum will also feature several other National Theatre Live shows throughout the season schedule including:
-FELA! on February 13 at 2 p.m..
-King Lear on February 27. (Exact show time to be announced.)
-Frankenstein (directed by Danny Boyle) on April 3. (Exact show time to be announced.)
-Cherry Orchard in July. (Exact date to be announced.)
Tickets for National Theatre Live shows are $18 and $15 for Phoenix Art Museum and Arizona Theatre Company members, which can be purchased on the museum's website here.
