in downtown Phoenix since April. Come October, the oldest warehouse in Phoenix will host the city's first Design Museum.
Mark Dudlik, a local designer and the museum's co-founder, says the project's been in the works since 2009, and is an effort between himself and designer Tanner Woodford, with the help of copywriter Scott Rostohar.
The museum, Dudlik says, will be part of Lost Creature, a non-profit that "aims to bridge culture and creativity with community projects," and its opening will coincide with Phoenix Design Week, a three-week (and growing) celebration of local and national design.
The building at 411 South 2nd St. was once home to the Arizona Paper Box Company in 1946. It's a fitting spot, says Dudlik, for October's exhibitions, which include a few traveling showcases of printed design work juried by AIGA, the professional association for design.
The museum will also be host to a permanent collection of work by late Phoenix-based designer Kenneth White and an adjoining gift shop, called Ignorance and Ambition, that will sell limited-edition products by local designers.
For now, the physical museum and gift shop will be temporary; they're only open for the month of October. And while you might catch Dudlik sweeping out a few corners and adjusting displays until opening day, he says his goal will be to integrate the style of the building's architecture and the design work.
The Phoenix Design Museum will be open Tuesday through Sunday between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.. There will be an opening reception on October 13 at 8 p.m. as part of Phoenix Design Week.
