Stop pissing on our history. That's the basic message behind The Plowshare Group's latest public service announcement. According to a press release issued by the National Landscape Conservation System, there's been a dramatic increase over the past few months in vandalism at various historic sites, including the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area near Las Vegas and the Agua Fria National Monument, just north of Phoenix.

The Agua Fria monument is home to thousands of petroglyphs -- images chipped and carved into the rocks by ancient peoples thousands of years ago. Apparently, some jackasses took it upon themselves to spray paint over several panels of petroglyphs. The graffiti was described as "obscenities and a series of faces in the patterns of jack-o-lanterns."

According to the National Landscape Conservation System, that's only part of the damage being done to conservation sites. "Rock art is used for target practice. Boulders containing petroglyphs have been trucked away, one not long ago in Arizona. Human remains are disturbed," the press release states. "Rock shelters and habitation sites are burrowed into, sifted through, and dug out by those searching for artifacts. Indeed, some would-be vandals and looters are using GPS tracking devices to find ruins only to deface or remove them when they do."

The NLCS hopes the PSA's will raise awareness of the vandalism, and encourage people to visit sites like the Agua Fria National Monument and see what they can do to help conserve historic lands.

If you're one of the morons stealing or spray painting over ancient rock art, get a life (and a brain and some respect) and stop. If you'd like to learn more about our historic Arizona sites and how to prevent vandalism, check out the PSA's at the National Landscape Conservation System website.
