If you wait long enough, everything thats played on Broadway in the past decade will make its way to Phoenix -- usually in the form of a road company that docks for two weeks at Gammage Auditorium. This week its Young Frankenstein, the glitzy musical translation of Mel Brooks 1974 comedy film, written by Brooks and Thomas Meehan with music and lyrics by Brooks. The movie is an effective parody of black-and-white Universal horror movies and of Mary Shelleys Frankenstein.
In this version of Brooks translation of his own film, the monster is a song-and-dance man whos been cobbled together from pieces of cadavers. When the show opened on Broadway in late 2007, some New York critics suggested that this musicalization was, too. Still, the tuner went on to play for more than a year before launching this successful and well-received touring production.
