For those who aren't familiar with the complexities of the Gregorian calendar, tomorrow is certainly going to be unique. During Leap Years such as 2012, an extra day (February 29) is added to the datebook in order to balance out the eternal rotation of the earth around the sun.
Since it happens every four years, Leap Day has a bit of folklore and an aura of kookiness attached to it (hence that nutty 30 Rock episode that aired last week). Supposedly, it was once considered the only day when women can partake in "ladies privilege" and propose to men, as depicted in that execrable Amy Adams rom-com from a few years back.
It's also yet another excuse to party, which is what the proprietors few local bars and club are planning on doing with special fetes planned for the occasion.
Whiskey River Saloon
DJ Medik will be dropping Top 40, hip-hop, rock and dance hits all evening while the barkeeps sping 50-cent drinks until 11 p.m. The ladies can participate in all sorts of crazy contests and giveaways starting at midnight. Doors open at 6 p.m.
Graham Central Station
Running a little short until payday on Friday? No problem, as this four-room nightclub will b pouring $1.25 well drinks, house wines, and longnecks until 11 p.m. Ladies also have a chance to score $300 during the "Little Black Dress" contest. Doors open at 8 p.m.
Fort McDowell Casino
Various perks and prizes will be doled out to those lucky enough to have been born during a Leap Year and who are members of the casino's Fortune Club. For everyone else, free food will be available on the casino floor from 5 to 8 p.m. and local band The Whip-Its will perform in the Lucky 7 Saloon starting at 6 p.m. Admission is free.
Rhythm Room
The Pabst Blue Ribbon will be flowing at the Leap Year Partay, which will offer $1.50 cans of the hipster brew. Meanwhile, local musicians and performers Matthew Reveles, Bears of Manitou, and Bad Lucy will be feature on the stage. Doors open at 7 p.m. Admission is $5.
The cats who pay a visit to the downtown Phoenix hipster haven will be doing plenty of leaping, not to mention bounding, stomping, jumping, and dancing on both floors during one of the establishment's more action-packed nights. The weekly Scenario session takes place upstairs, while bass-heavy tracks are laid down on the ground floor during Sub:Concious. Special Leap Day guests include the Phoenix Drum 'n' Bass and Kingz Kip Killagain and Shabda. The beats get going at 9 p.m. The cover is $3.
Crescent Ballroom
Popular partymeisters Sean Watson and Jake Goldsmith will stage a unique affair in the Crescent's lounge during the evening of Leap Day, which should include drink specials and hot spins. Also on tap is a return visit to the Valley by prodigal sons Lymbyc Systym, who will perform a special DJ set. The event starts at 8 p.m. Admission is free.
American Junkie
The Scottsdale nightspot will be throwing "the kind of party that can only happen once every four years" on Wednesday night, which will feature a hosted bar starting at 9 p.m. Old Town regulars (and DJ BFFs for life) Benjamin Cutswell and DJ Fashen will provide the soundtrack, models and go-go dancers will be in the house, and all sorts of schwag will be thrown out to patrons, who can also spin the drink wheel for free booze. Admission is free.
