Phoenix FC is a long way away from being a great soccer team. The Wolves only claimed 9 points in the first eight matches of their inaugural season. The football club has a lot of talented young players but that young talent seems to translate into red cards just about as often as goals. Still, the team shows flashes of brilliance (like playing shorthanded and still holding Real Salt Lake of the MLS to a scoreless draw) and on those nights, it’s easy to imagine the team pulling its act together.
On Thursday. May 23, the Wolves will host a team that’s had its act together for as long as the USL-PRO league has existed. The Charlotte Eagles have been reliably excellent -- the club has made the playoffs in 15 of 17 seasons and has claimed two league titles -- but a bad run of form has left the Eagles languishing in the middle of the table so far.
