Ah, the comfort of the nightlight – its thin, pale beams chasing away the monsters of the imagination in our sugar-fueled childhoods. Nowadays, our plug-in savior casts enough illumination to keep us from stubbing our toes in the shroud of darkness. More than a mere sentinel protecting us from dangers real and imagined, light can take a time out from its functional life to get playful and party.

Alwun House sets the stage with its “Lighthouse” exhibit, a show that turns out the lights to allow the artwork to shine on its own. Each piece incorporates light into its design, whether by flame, electric flicker, or the glow of a video screen, and features works by more than 20 artists, including Tato Caraveo and Landy Headley.

“Lighthouse” opens with an artist reception at 7 p.m. Saturday, November 8, featuring music by Doug Cholewa as well as by the drum-machine-infused, blue-collar, gospel/pop sensations the Runaway Diamonds.
