In honor of what would have been Frida Kahlo's 106th birthday, the Phoenix Fridas are preparing a celebration fit for a queen.

Starting on July's First Friday with the exhibition "Celebrating Frida" at Burton Barr Central Library, the local group of artists and artisans will pay homage to the Mexican painter with a display of artwork inspired by her life and work.

The Phoenix Fridas group was founded by Kathy Cano-Murillo in 2004 as a way to motivate and support Latinas in the arts and crafts community. The rotating group of members currently includes 10 talented women: Cano-Murillo, Carmen Guerrero, Emily Costello, Anita Mabante Leach, Annalisa Rios, Monique Sanderson-Mata, Michele Delgado, Gloria Casillas-Martinez, Veronica Verdugo-Lornell, and Diana Calderon.

Though the styles and backgrounds of the members are quite different, there is one thing they all share: an affinity for Kahlo.

The exhibition opens Friday, July 5, at 6 p.m. and will be on view through Sunday, July 28. The opening reception includes musical entertainment provided by Maya Murillo (who is a contributor to Jackalope Ranch) and Carmen de Novias Guerro.

The celebration continues on Saturday, July 6, (Frida's birthday) with a craft market open from 1 to 4 p.m.

The artists will host "I Paint My Own Reality," a discussion of how Frida inspires their work, on Thursday, July 11 from 6 to 8 p.m..

Finally, Cano-Murillo will lead a Frida Shrine Workshop on Saturday, July 10. You can register by calling 602-262-4636.
