The drive-in movie is a quickly dwindling pastime in Arizona.
Since the early 40's, Arizona has seen the openings and closings of nearly 50 outdoor theaters, including the Rodeo Drive-In and the DeAnza Drive-In. Today, only two remain in operation, the West Wind Glendale 9 Drive-In and the Apache Drive-In in Globe.
A California-based company called West Wind owns the Glendale 9 drive-in and used to own and operate the Scottsdale 6 drive-in. The Scottsdale location closed when West Wind was unable to reach a lease agreement with the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, which owns the land.
To say thanks to its loyal drive-in moviegoers, West Wind is throwing a customer appreciation event on Thursday, August 23 at all of its locations, including the Glendale 9.
The all-ages event will feature live music, games, $1 nachos, and the movies, Men in Black, Madagascar 3, and The Avengers. Gates open at 6 p.m. and parking spots are limited.
To reserve your parking space, visit the West Wind Glendale 9 Eventbrite page.
The West Wind Glendale 9 Drive-In is at 5650 N. 55th Avenue in Glendale. Visit West Wind Drive-Ins or call (623) 939-9715 for more information.
