In a recent interview on NPR’s Fresh Air, Meryl Streep commented that once she hit the age of 40 directors, agents, and the film industry in general had no idea what to do with her role-wise – with the exception of casting her as haggard witches. It’s not an uncommon plight of aging women in Hollywood, but there are a notable handful (including Streep) who have successful post-menopausal careers such as Helen Mirren, Susan Sarandon, and, of course, Lily Tomlin.
At 72, the actress and comedian is very much still kicking and, with her stage act, consistently helping others get kicks. In the vein of Lucille Ball and Carol Burnett, Tomlin churns through her stable of wacky characters (including telephone switchboard gossip Ernestine) made famous during her stint on Laugh-In.
