Grab your sunglasses. You’ll need them because Glendale’s mayor and city council -- along with Phoenix Coyotes captain Shane Doan -- have flipped the switch that lights up 16 blocks of historic downtown Glendale with 1.5 million lights. Known as Glendale Glitters, the display marks the suburb's traditional start to the holiday season dating back 20 years. It’s also the largest lighting production in the state, and we wouldn't be surprised if you could see it from space, too. (We’re guessing, but it seems possible.) Jingle Bell Rockin’ Nights is the theme, with a plethora of music and dance provided by local performers, including Fiesta Mexicana Dance Company and Dance Gallerie. Santa, of course, will be on hand as well.
Bask in the glow from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, December 20 in Downtown Glendale, just northeast of 59th and Glendale Avenues. Admission is free. Visit www.glendaleaz.com/Glitters/index.cfm.
