With every new technology we invent, the Star Trek universe seems more and more realistic. Tons of futuristic technologies (tablets, Skype, Blueetooth) are now just mundane parts of our daily lives. On the other hand, we’re nowhere remotely close to interstellar travel, and the fact that we’ve never observed any evidence of intelligent life out there would seem to suggest that we’re not hitching a ride with anyone either.

If the thought of being stuck on Earth depresses you, consider spending your Friday night at the Mesa Community College Planetarium, 1833 West Southern Avenue, for the “Stars of the Pharaohs” Astronomy Night. The event features a 25-minute presentation on the relationship between astronomy and Ancient Egyptian religion. Weather permitting, the Planetarium will also offer telescope viewings of the moon and various other celestial bodies.
