Thanks to some bad apples in the Catholic priesthood, altar boys have been in the spotlight for having more than just scripture crammed down their throats.
After all of the negative focus on pedo priests, it’ll be a godsend when the smash off-Broadway hit Altar Boyz rolls into Desert Stages Theatre’s Actors Café on Friday, March 23. The show satirizes pious pop by following fictional Christian boy-band members Matthew, Mark, Luke, Juan, and Abraham (the token Jew, natch) as they wrap up a national tour.
The group worships the almighty via such pithy lyrics as "Jesus called me on my cell phone," and "Girl you make me want to wait." And while the latter would make a great theme song for abstinence educators, these altar boys aren't exactly angels. "They're very sincere in their singing for Jesus, but they're not the best Christians," says director Terry Helland. "There's a lot of innuendo in the show."
Fridays, Saturdays, 7:30 p.m.; Sun., March 25, 2 p.m. Starts: March 23. Continues through May 20, 2012
