Considering its namesake comes from a 17th-century Zen Buddhist linked verse, upcoming exhibition “Narrow Road to the Interior,” is designed to take museumgoers on a journey through the immaterial.

Galleries host work from contemporary Japanese artists, including more than 100 photographs and instillations using raw materials like light, wood and stone. Featured pieces from salt artist Motoi Yamamoto, printmaker Yoshiko Shimano, and large-scale waterfall painter Hiroshi Senju among others, create a visual representation of such broad-scale concepts as spiritual passage and reflection of nature.

The exhibition is on view through Sunday, January 12, with tie-ins like film showings and a Japanese tea ceremony over the next few months.

Take a walk down the (metaphorical) road at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, 7374 East Second Street. Admission is $7, but free for members. Visit www.smoca.org or call 480-874-4666.

Thursdays-Saturdays, 12-9 p.m.; Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Sundays, 12-5 p.m. Starts: Sept. 21. Continues through Jan. 12, 2013
