Cahuamanta El Yaqui

Cahuamanta El Yaqui is a small Mexican restaurant on Phoenix’s west side specializing in the cooking of southern Sonora, particularly the region around Ciudad Obregón. That means the menu is loaded with specialties from the state’s coastal region, including tostadas embarazadas, “pregnant” tostadas stacked with lime-cooked shrimp, calamari, and octopus, all of it delicately sluiced with chile and mayonnaise. There are also classic Sonora standards like grilled carne asada, cabeza tacos, and of course, the house specialty: cahuamanta, a very good stingray and shrimp stew that is garlicky, fragrant, and not nearly as fishy as you might guess.
