Greta Kline, a.k.a. Frankie Cosmos, has a knack for writing songs that reach into your soul and wring you out like a half-soaked washcloth. She knows how to squeeze the linen just right so a sense of longing mixed with subtle sophistication splashes out on the smooth acrylic beneath her feet. You can almost see the little flowers stuck to the bottom, so she doesn’t slip while stepping out of the tub.

While Frankie Cosmos is just one of many names Kline has used to label her projects, the band she has put together for her latest record, Vessel, is confident and appealing. Simple arrangements hover around Kline’s perfect indie rock vocals and steadily strummed guitar, and they flow from song to song, leaving the listener wanting more yet satisfied. The songs are short and to the point, yet complete and show the maturity of a songwriter who recently turned 24 and has a whopping 52 releases under her belt.

We caught up with Kline, who brings a certain economy to conversation, before Frankie Cosmos make their way to downtown Phoenix’s Crescent Ballroom on Monday, April 9.
What, if anything, excites you the most about playing in or visiting Phoenix?
The audience there was awesome last time, so hopefully, the show will be like that again. Also, we get to stay at our friend’s parents’ house and they are really nice.

How do you entertain yourself while on tour?
Writing, drawing, meeting people, podcasts.

I’m really digging the single, “Apathy.” Can you give me a little background about this song?
This song was written from a place of internal tension and cognitive dissonance about a relationship. It has a lot of questions in it and it’s kind of all over the place. The song keeps unfolding to me as I get further from having written it.?

Can we expect it to be part of the set while you’re here?
Yes!

What should new and old fans alike know about your new music?
Take whatever you want from it.

Besides Frankie Cosmos, what three bands should everyone listen to?
Vagabon, Kero Kero Bonito, Anna McClellan.

What else is on the horizon for the band?
Lots of touring.
