She's at the forefront of the "white folks saying the N-word debate," been compared to Odd Future's Tyler the Creator, and her big single "Gucci Gucci" possesses anti-commercialism undertones, but if you ignore all the implications of her music, Kreasyshawn makes party music.
And that's a handy thing, seeing as she's headlining Power 98.3's Labor Day in Havasu Concert Sunday, September 4, at the London Bridge Resort. The weekend is packed with hip-hop heavy hitters: Saturday, September 3, features Baby Bash.
"Labor Day weekend is going to be bonkers as Power 98.3 takes over Kokomo at the London Bridge Resort all weekend," states Power 98.3's site.
Kreayshawn has enjoyed a curious rise. The Oakland rapper's "Gucci Gucci" was a massive viral hit, resulting in Columbia Records signing the 21-year-old. The recognition brought her into the spotlight, though not always in positive ways. Both Lil' Wayne and Game fired on Kreayshawn and her associates, V-Nasty and The White Girl Mob for their use of the N-word, with the latter stating in XXL Magazine: "You can't be playing with that word, some people will take it serious...Especially coming from someone that's [not black]. There's a lot of tragic history behind it."
Game doesn't always make much sense (my nerd beef with Game stems from "Martians Vs. Goblins," from The R.E.D. Album, where he raps "Mad that DC Comics overlooked me/'Cause Captain America's straight pussy" -- yo dude, Captain America is Marvel Comics) but I hear Game loud and clear here. It's a word fraught with terrible meaning, and I can see why reading Kreayshawn tweet is upsetting.
Does that negate Kreayshawn as a rapper? Best I can tell she hasn't committed the word to tape, and after the controversy she's endured, I doubt her debut album will feature her uttering the term.
As for Baby Bash, well, I guess there's a lot less drama there. He's promoting an energy drink called Go Girl, and while I could rail on the negative aspects of energy drinks, portions of the profits generated by the drinks benefit breast cancer research. Which is...seriously classy of Baby Bash.
