If you stopped by new dance venue Monarch Theatre during its soft opening in late April and thought the place was pretty fly, we've got some news: It's gonna get even better, considering it ain't even half-done. Co-owner Pete "SuperMix" Salaz, who runs the joint along with Edson Madrigal and Sean "Senbad" Badger, says that while the 400 people who filled the place during its debut were impressed by what they saw, there still are more improvements to be made to the Monarch, 122 East Washington Street. "We received many compliments," he says. "Most thought that was the final product. In fact, we're about 30 percent done." So, if you return for the Cinco de Mayo edition of its new Latin Royal night on Friday, May 4, Lalo Cota's ever-evolving symbolic mural of a cocoon transforming into a monarch butterfly (which the artist is updating each week) will have reached a new stage and more of the posh amenities will be in place. There also might be people up in the club as the night will also serve as the official after-party for rock en español band Maná, which is performing earlier that evening at US Airways Center. Local DJs will spin an all-video mix of hip-hop, salsa, and reggaeton. Doors open at 9 p.m. Call 602-692-9633 for cover.
