They don't come much more "multi-cultural" than Rupa and the April Fishes. Born in California to Indian parents, songwriter Rupa Marya was raised in France, India, and the United States.

The music she makes with her group, The April Fishes, borrows sounds from all of her cultures. French nouvelle vague dances against Latin sounds, and Indian ragas meet up-tempo pop. The sound is fiesty enough for fans of a band like the Dresden Dolls, and falls in line with Arizona polyglots like Calexico or Giant Sand.

The group is scheduled to perform Saturday, September 24 at The Musical Instrument Museum. The show starts at 7 p.m., and tickets are $25. Read on to watch a performance from Rupa and download a free MP3.
