Officers from the Scottsdale Police Department have arrested a suspect involved in the brutal stabbing that occurred at nightclub and music venue Martini Ranch late last month.
Simon West, a 29-year-old resident of Gilbert, was taken into custody by Scottsdale cops on Monday afternoon, exactly a week after a patron was stabbed multiple times from behind while exiting the Old Town establishment on June 24.
According to an announcement released by Scottsdale Police earlier today, West was arrested without incident at the Sheraton Desert Oasis Hotel in North Scottsdale. He was charged with aggravated assault with intent to cause serious physical injury.
Lewis is currently being held on a $50,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Maricopa County Superior Court on July 9.
While no information has been released regarding possible motives in the case, Scottsdale Police stated that the unidentified 34-year-old male victim in the stabbing, who was critically wounded and had to undergo surgery, was released from a local hospital sometime last week and is recovering from his injuries.
As New Times has previously reported, it's the second violent incident to occur at the venue in 2013, coming six months after the stabbing death of former ASU football player Tyrice Thompson in January.
As a result, Scottsdale Mayor Jim Lane and other city officials are pursuing a proposed ordinance that would increase patron safety via stricter security regulations and the possible presence of off-duty police officers at nightlife establishments in Old Town and elsewhere.
"The two incidents at Martini Ranch in the last six months, although isolated, demonstrate the need to improve safety in Scottsdale's bars and nightclubs," Lane told the media in a prepared statement released shortly after the latest stabbing.
The ordinance will reportedly be voted on by the Scottsdale City Council sometime in August.
