As the temperatures rise in the Valley, the turnout at local bars and clubs tends to drop, for the most part. Some nightlife spots still attract a crowd despite the killer heat, like the place that Club Candids visited in June.
Whether it was costumed partiers at Apollo's Lounge, college kids on summer break at Fat Tuesday in Tempe, or the rock 'n' roll revelry at Mill Avenue's Big Bang, we saw swarms of folks out after dark, each throwing a middle finger Mother Nature's way as they drank and debauched, regardless of how hot it got.
Here's a look back at some of the best Club Candids photos from last month.
Longtime Mill Avenue favorite Fat Tuesday in Tempe was poppin' off with phat beats and sweet drinks on Friday, May 30, when Club Candids came through the Mardi Gras-themed joint with camera in hand. Its party-hearty patrons were not only busy sampling all the sweet daiquiris (including its infamously potent 190 Octane) but also shaking a tail feather to phat beats, or just partaking in the social scene.
They really wanted us to take their picture. Happy to oblige.
D. Baxter is a total party animal.
Sassy and classy.
Tongue Tied's Phoenix Comicon Party at Apollo's
Bam! Pow! Boom! Costumed heroes, heroines, and even a few villains engaged in some lively activity and interaction on the dance floor and out on the patio of Apollo's Lounge during Tongue Tied's Comicon Party on Saturday, June 7. There weren't any spectacular exchanges of fisticuffs or brooding soliloquies uttered, insofar as we could tell, at this unofficial Phoenix Comicon after-party as attendees preferred to show off their mutant dance powers while DJs Roya and Funkfinger spun indie music and retro hits.
A real nightcrawler, both metaphorically and literally.
They're the heroes we deserve.
Her superpower is being kick-ass.
New Times Summer Guide Party at Maya
While we're loathe to admit it, summer is upon us once again. And we here at Phoenix New Times ushered in the season in stylish fashion on Thursday, June 12, with our annual summer guide launch party at Maya Day and Nightclub in Scottsdale.
Happy to be there.
Total knockouts.
They're quite the crew.
Having a blast.
The lounge at the Crescent Ballroom was alive with electro sounds and moving bodies on Saturday, June 21, during the weekly Kismet dance party. A fun crowd of 20-somethings spent a hot summer night dancing and drinking while DJ Sean Watson dropped bustling beats and remixes from the decks.
The spazziest livliest of the whole bunch.
Uh...ditto.
These two have a case of hug addiction.
DJ Sean Watson, doing what he does best.
While Mill Avenue's usual weekend night crowd of bar hoppers were sweating it up on Saturday, June 28, the folks down in The Big Bang were beating the heat by partaking in some cool tunes being laid down by its resident musicians. The tune jockeys at the basement piano bar in Tempe tickled the ivories on a pair of baby grands and served up a variety of pop favorites, rock 'n' roll anthems and pop standards that got the packed house giddily cheering and singing along, mostly in harmony and sometimes joyfully off-key fashion.
Yeeeeaaahhh!
Party for four.
Mugging for the camera, mid-set.
Big fun at Big Bang.
