It's rare that musicians or other people in the public eye actually admit they've been lying--unless they're found out, Tiger Woods-style--but Trent Reznor is excited about his own "betrayal" of Nine Inch Nails fans.
I guess the lie is okay when the truth stuns and excites millions of fans, right? Three months after announcing their return from a four-year hiatus, Reznor revealed via a Tumblr note that the Nine Inch Nails' eighth LP will be released by the end of the year. It will be the first new NIN music since 2008's The Slip.
"I've been less than honest about what I've really been up to lately," Reznor said in a press release. "For the last year I've been secretly working non-stop with Atticus Ross and Alan Moulder on a new, full-length Nine Inch Nails' record, which I am happy to say is finished and frankly fucking great."
According to Reznor, the band's new music is the motivation for their reconfiguration and the upcoming summer arena tour. He admits that his other musical projects really fueled his creativity, and it made him want to take Nine Inch Nails to a new place.
Since allegedly putting NIN to rest, he's worked on many acclaimed soundtracks including The Social Network and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo--and he's also created some atmospheric rock and incredible stage productions with his band How to Destroy Angels, which includes his wife Mariqueen Maandig, Atticus Ross, and designer Rob Sheridan.
With a lineup that now includes Telefon Tel Aviv's Josh Eustis, King Crimson's Adrian Belew, Alessandro Cortini, Robin Finck, and Ilan Rubin, NIN singed with Columbia Records and will officially make their debut on July 26 at the Fuji Rock Festival in Japan.
I suppose the only question left for Reznor is a simple one: Why the f*ck did he keep it so secret if it was so f**king good?
Yes, I'm aware that NIN is a big deal, and as the leader of a perennially experimental, artsy band, Reznor obviously feels like he can pull shenanigans like telling fans they're going on hiatus for God knows how long only to announce an album out of nowhere after four years.
It's a Catch-22: On one hand, it would be ideal to know that the band is working on new music as it's happening--getting the chance to hear about the recording process in interviews, getting samples of the work in progress. On the other: A new album out of nowhere is a pleasant surprise...but only if the album was going to be released in, say, like a month, right?
However you feel about it, this is just another highly anticipated album scheduled to come out in 2013. Think about it: Puscifer, Black Sabbath, Alice in Chains, David Bowie, Orianthi, Anthrax, Sevendust, Ghost B.C., Stone Sour, Volbeat, Rob Zombie, Deep Purple, Queens of the Stone Age, Megadeth--the list goes on and on.
Whether it's a good surprise or not, Nine Inch Nails has only helped to solidify the fact that 2013 is certainly a come back year for rock music.
