Arizona Diamondbacks left-handed starting pitcher Wade Miley had the New York Yankees hitters fooled for six innings Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium. In the seventh, it all fell apart for Miley, and the D-backs' 3-0 lead quickly evaporated before eventually losing 4-3, their second-straight loss in the Bronx.
The second-year pitcher was staked to a two-run lead after the first inning, when Paul Goldschmidt hit a two-run homer off CC Sabathia. Miley then proceeded to breeze through the Yankees' lineup, giving up only two hits and no walks for six innings.
In the seventh, Miley got Kevin Youkilis to ground out and he gave up a single to Ben Francisco before striking out Francisco Cervelli. With two outs, Brennan Boesch doubled, putting men on second and third, at which point Miley walked the next two batters, putting the first Yankee run on the board.
With that, Miley's day was done. Reliever Tony Sipp allowed to a two-run single to Brett Gardner, and the game was tied. It was Sipp's second blown save of the year. In the eighth, first-year Yankee Travis Hafner launched a pinch-hit two-out homer to give the Yanks a 4-3 lead. Closer Mariano Rivera shut down the D-backs in the ninth, and it was game over.
