During the opening inning, Corbin beaned Miami's Austin Kearns with a fastball and proceeded to load the bases just before to Omar Infante (a.k.a. the Marlins' best slugger) stepped up to swing.
Welcome to the big leagues, Patrick.
Thankfully, the day ended well for Corbin as Arizona provided plenty of run support during the game (including homers from Cody Ransom and Justin Upton) and defeated Miami 9-5 to give the rookie hurler his first win. Thus, the D-Backs can now flee the ugly-ass Marlins Park having won three of their four games against the fish.
To his credit, Corbin worked his way out of the bases loaded jam by forcing Infante into a grounder that quickly became an inning-ending twin killing when he tossed the ball to catcher Henry Blanco, who in turn found Paul Goldschmidt for the 1-2-3 double play.
Afterwards, Corbin settled into a groove and began hitting strikes and earned three K's amid 94 pitches. He ran into trouble in the bottom of the fifth, however, allowing a single from John Buck followed by a 366-foot homer by Donnie Murphy. (Overall, Corbin earned eight hits and three runs in his first game.)
The good news, however, is that Arizona was already leading 7-0 by that point. After Random's 401-foot two-run jack in the second inning, the D-Backs ratcheted up the score thanks in part to a couple errors by Miami during a busy five-run fourth inning.
A fielding gaffe by Infante turned a sacrifice fly by Corbin into a base hit and allowed Gerardo Parra to advance to third on a separate throwing error. Willie Bloomquist's double then brought in two runs, followed by a sac-fly by Ryan Roberts to notch another run. Upton then capped things off with a 404-foot dinger.
Needless to say, Marlins pitcher Mark Buehrle wasn't pleased, as he earned his fourth loss of the season.
The D-Backs (12-11) will head up the eastern seaboard to the nation's capital to start a three-game series with the resurgent Washington Nationals (14-8), who are currently tied with the Atlanta Braves atop the National League East.
Arizona's Trevor Cahill (1-2, 3.70 ERA) goes for his second win of the season against D.C.'s Jordan Zimmermann (1-1, 1.33). First pitch is at 4:05 p.m. TV: Fox Sports Arizona. Radio: KTAR 620-AM. For more info, visit www.dbacks.com.
