Quick tip for an employee at the Huachuca City Landfill: When there are prison inmates working alongside you, don't leave the keys in a city-owned car.

Arizona Department of Corrections spokesman Barrett Marson confirmed to New Times this morning that inmate Lonnie Smith escaped a work detail at the landfill yesterday by stealing the employee's vehicle.

Smith, who's still on the run, took off from the work crew at the dump around 1 p.m. yesterday.

Smith is a minimum-security inmate at the Arizona prison complex in Douglas who was serving time for a drug paraphernalia violation and misconduct involving a weapon. A convicted thief and forger, he picked up the weapons charge after being caught with a weapon in his home.

He was scheduled to be released in June of 2012.
