A Kingman man was indicted for murder last week in the death of his girlfriend's 13-month-old daughter.

Dustin Colpitts, 21, of Kingman, called police earlier this month when he noticed the baby wasn't breathing. The child was taken to the Kingman Regional Medical Center, and then airlifted to a Las Vegas hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Hospital staff treating the baby noticed bruising on the baby's face and head.

Colpitts reportedly told police he shook and slapped the baby before calling 911, but says it was an attempt to revive the girl when she was having trouble breathing.

However, hospital staff told police the bruises were in various stages of healing, which indicates they were sustained over time, not during one isolated incident, as Colpitts claims.

In addition to the murder charge, Colpitts is also charged with felony child abuse and domestic violence/aggravated assault. He's being held in the Mohave County Jail on a $250,00 bond.
