When we heard that Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon's wife, Christa Severns, filed for divorce Monday, we were convinced that finally we'd get the gossip motherlode. Surely these two hate each other now, right? Surely everybody's just dying to throw down!
Alas, no. "We are having the most amicable divorce in the history of the world," Severns told New Times yesterday.
The two were married in November 1993 and have been separated for awhile. Severns' petition asks for joint legal custody of their 10-year-old son, Jake, and "reasonable and liberal parenting" for her soon-to-be-ex. Isn't that sweet?
Indeed, things are so friendly between these two that Severns told us that -- unless the longtime Democrat should suddenly morph into Sarah Palin -- Gordon still has her vote. "I'm only changing my vote if he changes his stance on choice or forces Jake to get married at 17 for political reasons," she said.
All this goodwill is bad news for the newspaper business, to be sure. But what the heck. It's nice to see a politician managing a divorce without forcing us to hear all the dirty details, right?
