Some people just don't know when to give up -- like the three men arrested in Phoenix today after the cops say they committed an armed robbery at a pawn shop, then proceeded to lead police on a car chase, break into a house, kidnap a woman and her 5-year-old son, and hold them hostage as they attempted to escape police.
Phoenix police Sergeant Steve Martos tells New Times it all started about 10:30 a.m. when three men -- whose names haven't been released -- got their guns and went to raid a pawn shop on the 4100 block of West Indian School Road.
Martos says the men were smashing glass cases in the pawn shop, stealing jewelry, and bloodying themselves up from the broken glass in the process.
Shortly after they fled the pawn shop in their truck, a police officer spotted it and began pursuit.
Around 28th Avenue and West Palm Lane, one of the three men had experienced enough and bailed from the truck, while the other two kept driving before crashing into a brick wall a few blocks away.
That's when the two men allegedly decided to break into a home, where they found a woman and her 5-year-old son.
The men tied up the woman, and put her and her son in the bathroom for nearly an hour.
For the next part of their plan to evade police, Martos says the men decided to make the woman drive them in her Hummer SUV so they could get away.
The woman started to drive down the street before Martos says a patrol officer noticed "something peculiar" about the Hummer and pulled it over -- whereupon they found one of the men in the passenger's seat, and the other with a gun in the backseat next to the 5-year-old boy.
The two men, as well as the one who jumped from the truck earlier, were arrested without any further incident or injury, which Martos says is an "absolutely amazing sequence of events."
As for the charges they're facing -- the cops haven't even added that up yet, but Martos says it'll be a laundry list.
