Bling out your car with a Phoenix Sun license plate and you'll be helping the basketball team's charity organization.
Arizona law requires that $17 of the $25 fee paid by people who buy specialty plates must go to charities. Other specialty plates in Arizona include: the Arizona Diamondbacks, child abuse prevention, and the one that never looks good in an accident, "In God We Trust."
Organizations that want Arizona to make a specialty plate pay the state $32,000 up front for the privilege, though they must first get the state Legislature to approve the design and message, says Cydney DeModica, spokeswoman for the state Motor Vehicles Divison.
While anyone can get one of those plates, DeModica explains that other specialty plates we've seen, like for veterans or the family members of fallen soldiers, require some bona fides.
DeModica expects the Suns offering to do well.
"There are a lot of Suns fans out there," she says. "It's a really good looking plate. It's very bright."
