Scottsdale police are looking for a robbery suspect who reportedly bit off part of a victim's ear during an attempted robbery at an ATM.
The bloody attack began at about 8:20 p.m. on Tuesday, when thug and his woman accomplice used — or pretended to use — the ATM at First Street and Brown Avenue in downtown Scottsdale.
The victim, a man in his 20s or 30s, was standing behind them. He moved up to the ATM after the pair seemed to walk away and punched in his PIN. He didn't notice them sneak up from behind.
"Without warning," the male suspect began attacking the victim with his fists, said Scottsdale police Sergeant Ben Hoster.
The victim put up a "decent fight" as the criminals attempted to steal his cash and wallet, Hoster said.
But after the two men fell to the ground during the struggle, the attacker "bit a portion of the victim's left ear off."
Meanwhile, a witness saw the cowardly attacker's accomplice standing at the ATM, tapping the screen's menu.
Hoster said he assumes the fight ended when the suspect mutilated the victim's ear, and the victim released the suspect. The pair escaped with "a known amount of cash."
Witnesses saw them heading south on Brown Avenue and west toward Scottsdale Road.
The suspect who attacked the victim was an African-American man in his mid-20s, about 6 feet tall with a thin build, and wearing a light-colored baseball hat, white T-shirt, black-and-red striped shorts, and white, high-top athletic shoes. The accomplice was described as a white woman in her early 20s, with a thin build, above-average height, "reddish hair," and wearing a maroon T-shirt with white script lettering on the front.
Hoster said investigators are still trying to determine if any nearby video cameras captured images of the pair.
