When it comes to local candy, our go-to spot is Super Chunks Sweets and Treats, the confection shop in Scottsdale that opened earlier this year. The adorable store comes courtesy of pastry chef Country Velador, who's also been serving up treats next-door at Cowboy Ciao restaurant for years. She and her husband, Sergio, started Super Chunk by selling her unique caramel corn creations at farmers markets, but have since expanded to open their own storefront.

You can find everything from cookies and cakes to candy and ice cream at Super Chunk -- and as fans know, there's almost always something new to be tasted. Most recently Velador has added a line of Filipino ice candy to the mix. But as much as we love trying out the newest creations, our favorite treat will always be Velador's black licorice chews.

Black licorice gets a bad rap with modern candy fans for it's sometime medicinal taste. But as Velador once said, her version is "black licorice for people who don't like black licorice." For starters, it's much moister than the candy you're probably familiar with and offers a milder flavor. Velador makes hers with freshly toasted fennel and anise, finishing it off with a hint of green chartreuse.
