Oh, my, this is exciting.
For those who thought Bomberos Winebar, the hip little neighborhood hangout in Sunnyslope that shuttered last March after failed lease renewal discussions with the landlord (the space is now occupied by Timo), was ancient history, it's time to write a new chapter. Just over a year later, owners Kristi and Oscar Mastrantuono have announced a new home for Bomberos (the name means "firemen" in Spanish) -- downtown Phoenix.
The new location, in a 1943 pool house on West Vernon Avenue (at Vernon and Central), will serve as the starting point to what the Mastrantuono's are calling "Phase 1" -- a Bomberos to-go concept featuring patio seating only and serving up coffee, pastries, paninis, salads, and desserts. The to-go concept will open at the end of April.
Although the rest of the Bomberos' story is yet to be told, one could speculate its new location proper (Phase 2?) could be in the large home with a brick wall connecting it to the pool house (I see the filled-in pool area making for a spectacular patio scene.) Given what the Mastrantuono's did to Bomberos' former location in an old firehouse, making this location cool and cozy should be a snap.
Stay tuned for details.
