Finding authentic Filipino eats in the West Valley is like finding a needle in a haystack. But for you, we'll risk getting poked with a few false starts. Particularly if it means landing on a place like Casa Filipina Bakeshop and Restaurant (3531 W. Thunderbird Rd. Phoenix. 602-942-1258), where we recently sampled a dish called the Bistek Tagalog.
This salty, sliced beefsteak is marinated in soy sauce and lemon juice, piled high with ringlets of sautéed white onion and sliced potato.
Each piece of steak has been marinated so long that a fork can slice it with ease--and unlike similar beef dishes we've tried, it was sans fat, yet still full of flavor.
A heap of jasmine rice made the perfect lemony complement. We'll be back soon, to try another dish.
