Chaka Chaka: Lunch $10 & Under

Just around the corner from Chase Field, Chaka Chaka serves up the greasy, messy, spicy sandwiches you'd expect from a ballpark. Just five options at $5 each (except the signature Jerk Chicken, which costs $6), keep decisions simple - even for the notoriously indecisive.

After Michele Laudig blogged about this less-than-a-month-old joint, our mouths were watering. We pull up to the tiny former taco stand and are greeted by chef-owner Charlie Blonkenfeld, who hops off his cell phone and opens the front door.

At the counter, we do a quick one-take over the menu and ask for an egg sandwich with spinach and mushroom ($5) with a side of garlic fries ($2) and an iced tea ($2.50) to wash it all down. For less than $10, you can get three times the amount of food than you could get at BK or Mickey D's, but it's infinitely better.

We get our order to go, because although there are a few tables out front, it's not exactly a stop-and-stay-a-while place.

The garlic fries are easily addicting, but unfortunately not crispy enough to travel well. We were snacking on them in the car, but by the time we got situated and dove into our lunch they were a little mushy for our taste. Leave them in the fryer a little bit longer, and they'd be perfect.

We unwrap our nearly foot-long sandwich and discover scrambled eggs with a little gristle, mushrooms, cheese, spinach, caramelized onions, and a little kick from some sautéed peppers a special sauce that oozes out of the Simply Bread roll. Patas bravas are packed in there too, so we could've easily skipped the now-soggy fries.

This is NOT a sandwich for the diet conscious, but for those of us willing to blow our calorie count on a good deal: This is it. Check out the Chorico and Egg sandwich for a heartier kick or the Kosher dog loaded with peppers, onions, queso fresco and jalepeno mayo.

Blokenfeld tells us he's planning on trying his luck with post-game traffic, staying open late on some game nights. But we'd just as easily stumble in Saturday morning, clad in dark glasses and popping some aspirin: This stuff is perfect hangover food.
