In the highly quotable 2006 film Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Rick Bobby, French Formula One driver Jean Girard tries to force Ricky Bobby into saying that he loves crepes or else he'll break his arm.
His response: "Wait, are those the really thin pancakes? Oh my God, I love them." Of course, he ends up refusing to say it and gets his arm broken.
We love crepes. There, we said it -- especially the sweet dessert kind. Since we are dreaming of grabbing a warm one in France, we decided to pay a visit to Cibo Urban Wine Bar & Pizzeria and Marina's Cafe at The Village Coffee Shop to find a spot for the best strawberry crepe.
In This Corner: Marina's Cafe at The Village Coffee Shop
The Setup: Marina's Cafe at The Village Coffee Shop is located in the Stagecoach Village in Cave Creek. Basically, this shopping center feels like a old Western ghost town, with shops and restaurants. The cafe is large with a small patio and serves both savory and sweet crepes. Meals range from $6 to $14. It's open only from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. so choose your visiting time wisely.
The Good: For a strawberry crepe, there are four options. We went with the Strawberry Delight to be adventurous. It consisted of strawberries, cinnamon and powdered sugar. The crepe was light and didn't make us feel too guilty for indulging. Plus, it was only $7 for a large proportion.
The Bad: To start, the crepe was doughy and could've been cooked a little more. The strawberries were suspiciously not as crisp as fresh ones, so we figure they were sitting in a sweet liquid for awhile.
In This Corner: Cibo Urban Wine Cafe & Pizzeria
The Setup: If you're looking for a huge patio, twinkling lights and live music, Cibo is the spot. Located at the corner of 5th Avenue and Fillmore Street, this Italian restaurant complete with an adorable restored house serves wood-fired pizzas, pastas and crepes. Dinner dishes can range from $10 to $20.
The Good: Where do we start? The crepe came out smelling delicious. Then it hit the table and we dug in. The crepe itself was crispy and fluffy with strawberries and Nutella stuffed inside. It was fresh, hot and chocolately.
The Bad: The waitress made it sound like whip cream and ice cream were included with the order, but come to find out with the bill, the whip cream was an extra $2. Oh, and one corner of the crepe was a little overdone.
The Winner: Cibo's strawberry crepe because once it was gone we continued to scrape our plate hoping more would appear. Although the whipped cream was a surprise charge, it was thick, homemade whipped cream as opposed to canned crap. In other words, it was totally worth it and the guilt of possibly making this a daily tradition will also be worth it.
