Tucked away in a hard-to-find location on 7th Street just south of Bethany Home, Fuego Bistro serves up huge plates of food infused with Latin flavors. From their empanadas to their pernil asado, this is one restaurant where any order is a safe bet. Plus, a person could live on their side dishes alone, including green chili cornbread casserole, jalapeno creamed corn, and chipotle cheddar mashed potatoes. With the big portions of savory options, dessert aficionados should definitely satisfy their sweet tooth first and then take home the remnants of their entrée and sides for tomorrow's lunch.
Fuego Bistro offers a Banana Burrito that's unique and tasty, but with the buzz about bread pudding this year, we just had to order Fuego Bistro's Horchata Bread Pudding. So, how did it stack up against our Six Favorite Bread Puddings in Phoenix?
Find out after the jump...
The Horchata Bread Pudding may not have the best presentation, but there's something so right about a big mountain of ice cream, bread pudding, whipped cream, and chocolate and caramel sauce, no matter what it looks like. There are plenty of ritzy places to dine if you want a pretty plate, but Fuego Bistro is one place to head to when you just want a lot of satisfying, great tasting grub that you can't make at home.
As expected, the bread pudding itself delivers a lot of cinnamon flavor. It's not too mushy, and it still resembles bread - just bread that's buried underneath two scoops of chocolate malt ice cream. The ice cream has little crunchy pieces to add texture, and the plate is also sprinkled with big pieces of walnuts. It's tough to individually taste each element, but that doesn't matter because they're great when mixed together. And surprisingly, this dessert isn't overwhelmingly heavy, so you can wolf it down first and then have room to enjoy some braised short rib roast or homemade tortilla soup.
The final verdict? This Horchata Bread Pudding could definitely round out our list of favorite bread puddings, representing the homey, comforting style of dessert. However, for a super indulgent, knock-you-on-your-ass treat, the Chocolate Bread Pudding at Cornish Pasty Co. and Tracy Dempsey's "Pig in the Orchard" version at Citizen Public House are still the undefeated champions in our book.
