There are a lot of great Mexican restaurants in town but few places with a higher concentration then on 16th Street between Jefferson and Thomas. Our favorite of all those in the Calle 16 neighborhood is probably Asadero Norte de Sonora, a small, modest restaurant specializing in cheap but top-notch Sonoran-style eats.

The restaurant's specialties include whole grilled chickens, more than enough food to fill a family and available for just $10.65, and the parrillada, a mixed grill of meats served over an open flame. But off all the good eats, the one we love the most is the lengua, or beef tongue.

For some, the thought of noshing on tongue might sound unappealing but with one bite of Asadero Norte de Sonora's version, we think we'd have you convinced. The lengua is super tender and savory in a way that's unlike any other cut of meat. You can have it served in a taco or burrito, but we think it's best appreciated in the former. You get one of the restaurant's excellent tortillas stuffed with lengua, chopped onions, and cilantro. The simple preparation really lets the tongue take center stage.
