Hey, Phoenix, you're sweet. Thanks for coming out for the sixth annual Pie Social, cosponsored by New Times and Roosevelt Row. Hundreds of you sampled dozens of pies made by community bakers and celebrity chefs. Proceeds will benefit Bioscience High School and we hope you emerged full, happy, and inspired to bake for Thanksgiving.
The competition was fierce this year, and the results were close, although there was one chef whose pie stood out among the rest. A blind panel of six judged the pies, and the results are:
Best Presentation
(TIE) Adam Allison, SuperTruck, sweet Frito pie
and Jeff Kraus, Crepe Bar, wine pie
Best Taste
(TIE) Audrey Enriquez, Sheraton Wild Horse Pass, smoked pecan pie with maple tobacco budino, butternut squash, and sea salt meringue
and Julie Moreno, Jewel's, gluten-free sweet corn custard with blueberry mousse
Most Creative
Audrey Enriquez
Most Memorable
Audrey Enriquez
Best in Show
Audrey Enriquez
The crowd weighed in, as well, and we have three People's Choice awards to announce.
Third Place, People's Choice
Danielle Morris, Earnest, banana cream pie
Second Place, People's Choice
Country and Sergio Velador, Super Chunk, Dutch apple pie with black walnut ice cream
First Place, People's Choice
Garrett Verhage, Grassroots, butterscotch pie with candied pecans
Congrats to the winners and huge thanks to all the chefs — both celebrity and community — who baked. See you next year!
